Session 10 - Transcript

00:00 [DM (Aarya)] Oh yeah, I forgot about that. But anyway, we're live now. So, welcome to Phantom Chain session 10.
00:00 [DM (Aarya)] We're already on the 10th session. Would anyone like to start us off with a recap of the last session?
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] Sure. Do it. So, at the beginning of the last session we made our way through Vallaki TSA and we entered the city.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] And I am just kind of shocked that that's where we started last session because that feels like longer ago. But we do notice that the city feels kind of safe. The mists are all held back on the outsides of the walls.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] And then Saturno and Ember wake up. We let them know what's been going on. So, they notably wake up as soon as we enter the town's borders, which is kind of interesting in my opinion.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] But I don't want to read too far into that just because kind of like metagame reasons that they were asleep in the first place, kind of. But something to think about, just in case. Anyway, we head off to the church.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] This is ideally to get Iridyll some help. So, Iridyll, reminder, is infected with lycanthropy. Then, there's like this moment where Mercurio and Saturno are having some funny business with the townsperson.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] I think Mercurio was asking about directions to the church and Saturno throws a pebble. But anyways, we get the directions. We get the mad townsperson off of us.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] We find the church and we go inside. We explain our situation to the priest. And he lets us know that there is a way to suppress the effect of the curse for one night at a time.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] So, she'd basically have to come back monthly to keep doing this along with the moon phases. We learn as well that this priest is kind of like the substitute priest because Father Lucian Petrovich has disappeared on his regular morning walk, which he often takes with the coffin maker, who has also disappeared. The name of this father that we are talking to is Father Bryce.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] Let's see. While they were asleep, I think Ember and Saturno had some shared visions. Ember asked the priest about it.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] And he recommends that instead we ask the Dusk Elves about it, since it sounds like old magic. Anyhow, we go out to the northern gate and we get to the lake. We hear this catchphrase from the guards as we're leaving.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] And they say to us, all will be well. When we get around to the lake, Irena shares with us that she had seen this lake in her dreams. It was a recurring dream that she had since she was a child.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] And a wolf was chasing her around in this dream. She would wake up alone in the woods. Or that's when she would wake up, after she was alone in the woods.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] She would wake up in her bed. As we walk along the lake, we find an old shack and a stone slab. The stone slab is reminiscent of another one that we found near the windmill.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] This one has a different carving. And we learn that these were once wards. I think Ember's the one who was able to reveal that for us.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] Then we knock on the shack's door. We just take a peer inside. No one's there.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] There's no one to answer. But we do meet the hunters later, as most of you probably remember. Just a bit off the trail, we notice some footprints, though.
00:18 [Sildir (Tris)] And this kind of becomes the main theme for the session, in my opinion. Discovering what happened with these footprints and whatnot.
04:16 [DM (Aarya)] Piecing together a mystery.
04:19 [Sildir (Tris)] Basically. There's a couple sets of footprints. There's heavier boots.
04:19 [Sildir (Tris)] There's a lighter set. We also find a fang. And it looks like a scuffle occurred here.
04:19 [Sildir (Tris)] We kind of follow through both sets. And when we follow the heavier set of footprints, we start to hear chatter from a different camp. So we investigate this, and we find the Bastani camp that Madam Eva told us about a while back.
04:19 [Sildir (Tris)] Probably, like, maybe a day or two at most in-game time. But it feels like a while back. Anyway, we head to this camp, and Ember gets a weird feeling that someone's watching us.
04:19 [Sildir (Tris)] So Mercurio, upon hearing that, notices just for a second a creature with animalistic ears and a snout. Keeps it to himself for time being. I think even though Sildur did hit an insight roll on him and also chose to keep it to himself, that he knew Mercurio knew something.
04:19 [Sildir (Tris)] But anyway. Doesn't matter too much. We make it to the edge of town, and we see a group of houses there.
04:19 [Sildir (Tris)] There's some Bastani wandering around, but there's also some Dusk Elves there, which is super cool. Upon seeing the elves, Sililus is kind of taking point here for one of the— maybe the second time ever, the first time being with Strahd. So Sililus is definitely very excited.
04:19 [Sildir (Tris)] And he thinks that he's going to meet some high-class elves like himself. Well, as it turns out, these guys are really down on their luck, but they are at least able to live here with the Bastani who are kind to them. At least under—what's his name?
04:19 [Sildir (Tris)] Who's the ruler? What did you say? Oh, Lavash.
04:19 [Sildir (Tris)] Under Lavash's rule, they are doing okay.
06:46 [DM (Aarya)] Well, ruled is a bit formal, you know. He's just like the head of the camp.
06:51 [Sildir (Tris)] The head of the camp, yeah. You're right. Or, of course, you're right.
06:51 [Sildir (Tris)] You're the DM. But I meant to say, that was apparent.
07:00 [DM (Aarya)] I was just speaking poorly. Now I get you.
07:04 [Sildir (Tris)] Anyway. So, yeah, I mean, it's kind of a sad state that these elves are in. Their ears are all clipped, and only one of them is really willing to chat to us, and that's Casimir.
07:04 [Sildir (Tris)] So we go and we talk with Casimir, and he gives us a lot of good history. So, he gives us the context that his people had been living here, meaning in Barovia, even before Strahd, and even the— but there are people who apparently lived here before them called the First Folk, and that's like these statues and ruins that you see. They're from them, and these First Folk are still around, but they now inhabit the woods and the mountains instead.
07:56 [DM (Aarya)] Notably, they're descendants of the First Folk.
08:00 [Sildir (Tris)] Okay. Got it. As in just, they're not the same people, but of the same blood?
08:00 [Sildir (Tris)] Like, yeah, that makes sense. Okay. And then he also kind of tells us that he was around to see a lot of what happened with Strahd and how Strahd came to power.
08:00 [Sildir (Tris)] So basically, Strahd has a dad, of course. Most of us do at some point or another. And his dad was named Barov von Zarovich, and he shattered the peace that existed in Barovia.
08:00 [Sildir (Tris)] Basically, Barov came to where the Dusk Elves lived and demanded fealty. The leader at the time named Erevin denied the fealty, and Barov staged a war. There was one Dusk Elf, though, that betrayed people named Rahadin.
08:00 [Sildir (Tris)] And Rahadin was instrumental in Barov winning against the Dusk Elves. So once his father died, Strahd took over, and the Dusk Elves saw this as an opportunity to maybe rebel. But Strahd proved to be just as, if not more ruthless, and brutally shut down the rebellion and killed nearly every Dusk Elf.
08:00 [Sildir (Tris)] Now they depend on the Vistani hospitality to even really exist in this world. Beyond all of that, Rahadin is still around, and we actually met him in Barovia. He was the nastiest guy there.
08:00 [Sildir (Tris)] The one where we heard all of the weird screaming noises when he approached us. Anywho, Mercurio finally takes some time to share what he saw in the woods. He thinks it may have been a part vampire or something along those lines, but Casimir seems to think it's a werewolf.
10:17 [DM (Aarya)] I think when you mentioned that you had encountered Rahadin in Barovia Village, Casimir told you that he was the one who slaughtered all of the Dusk Elves at Strahd's command, and the screams that you hear around him are the remnants of those he killed.
10:38 [Sildir (Tris)] Okay, I will add that to my note. Notably. Give me one second.
10:38 [Sildir (Tris)] Alright, so Casimir kind of thinks that what we saw in the woods, or really what Mercurio saw in the woods, is a werewolf. He informs us that there is a pack of werewolves that hangs around Lake Beretok, and finds it weird for them to have made it this far. However, there is an old legend that he shares with us, and totally just a bunch of bollocks.
10:38 [Sildir (Tris)] It's just nighttime stories, but Sildur totally believes this. Basically, there's an old legend that there's a secret court of wolves that rules Valaki from the shadows, formed of a group of werewolves who sought to walk among regular humans as equals, eventually as their rulers. Rumor has it they're in Valaki.
10:38 [Sildir (Tris)] Anywho, that is a bunch of bullshit. Totally not a thing. Definitely, just, you know, why would that be the case?
10:38 [Sildir (Tris)] I think it's real good. Anyway, let's see, let's see. Iridel also asks about a cure.
10:38 [Sildir (Tris)] I don't think there was a lot of help available from Casimir on that. And also, Casimir hints at the royal family, or I guess the baron's family right now, the Valakovich family, being propagandists and having, you know, strangely exuding their influence upon the city. Also, there's a huge library of tomes there, and some of them have information on the court of wolves, or maybe just the story, or whatever.
10:38 [Sildir (Tris)] Casimir also kind of doubles down on the fact that, like doubles down for us at least, like double confirms that Strahd can and does control the wolves. Let's see. We also mention Aravel, and things suddenly get a little more urgent.
10:38 [Sildir (Tris)] He tells us to go see Lavash, Aravel's father, immediately. So we go. Sorry, this is long, guys.
13:11 [DM (Aarya)] We did a lot last session.
13:12 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah, I'm doing my best to trim it down, but it's a lot. So we go, and we go to the main tent in town. There's kind of a crazy scene unfolding in front of us.
13:12 [Sildir (Tris)] There's a youth kneeling on the ground. The shit is getting beaten out of this kid. And you can, you know, we kind of deduce that, or hear that it's Lavash and his brother who are there kind of serving the beating.
13:12 [Sildir (Tris)] And we interrupt this to let him know that we're here for Aravel, but we've kind of already picked up that his daughter was lost under the supervision of the boy that's getting beaten up named Alexi. And it seems that Yan gave Alexi some wine and ran off with Aravel.
13:57 [DM (Aarya)] I should point out it's Arabell with a bz, but yeah.
14:01 [Sildir (Tris)] Oh, okay. I've been spelling it wrong the whole time. Once it's in my notes, it's in my brain.
14:07 [DM (Aarya)] But yeah, I'll fix that.
14:08 [Sildir (Tris)] Arabell. Anywho, so yeah, he thinks that maybe Yan plotted this or is in cahoots with somebody. And Lavash is kind of interested in our story about the footsteps that we found earlier and really is just begging us to help altogether.
14:08 [Sildir (Tris)] They actually found Yan's dead body, and he was also clutching a piece of black fabric. I think when Mercurio saw the creature in the woods, he saw a glimpse of black fabric. And in the scuffle, we found a piece of black fabric laying on the ground in addition to the fang.
14:08 [Sildir (Tris)] So there's really something to this black fabric, guys. But we quickly make our way back to town. We're going to help out more tomorrow.
14:08 [Sildir (Tris)] But for now, we want to go to the Bluewater Inn and see if we can find the hunters there.
14:58 [DM (Aarya)] Also, you learned—I don't remember if you said this, but you learned that Yan's body was— they told you that his wounds were like as if he'd been raked by a great beast, like claw marks on his chest.
15:12 [Sildir (Tris)] Yes. So, yeah, that is correct. I think I did note that down, but I'm trying to eliminate bullets and I missed some important stuff as I go.
15:12 [Sildir (Tris)] But yeah, good point. So we make it over to the Bluewater Inn. As we approach, Pepito actually flies off and joins some ravens flying near the inn.
15:12 [Sildir (Tris)] We enter and we're greeted by the barkeep. So we take our seats and another man, also working at the bar, comes out and gives us a tankard of wine. So obviously, Mercurio is very happy and he invites the man to sit at the table with us.
15:12 [Sildir (Tris)] He begins asking some questions, including if he—you know, is there anything about the coffin maker or Father Lucian missing? And we also let him know about Aravel's disappearance. And, you know, he does know about it.
15:12 [Sildir (Tris)] His name's Erwin, by the way. And he is upset to hear because he also works a lot with Lavash and the Vistani help with wine delivery. Yeah, there's a couple moments in this tavern where, like, some slander is brought up around Baron Vargas and everyone is trying to get the other people to kind of hush up about that.
15:12 [Sildir (Tris)] Seems like talking, like, openly and negatively about the Baron is somewhat dangerous. You might get in trouble.
16:51 [DM (Aarya)] And notably, the two that were speaking up about him were a pair of, like, drunk brothers. Just, like, young guys. Just, like, at the bar, basically.
17:00 [Sildir (Tris)] Yep. And also we learn that the person that openly defies the Baron is named Fiona Wachter and perhaps the Wachter house altogether. The Court of Wolves is brought up.
17:00 [Sildir (Tris)] It was dismissed as a fairy tale by Erwin. And we meet another person that Erwin says we should talk to because he's a bard and so is Mercurio, named Rictavio. We exchange some stories.
17:00 [Sildir (Tris)] Rictavio shares one about Count Belasco. It's just kind of—it seems to be kind of, like, you know, a lesson learned type of story. It ends with Count Belasco dying by diving for his wig and he lands in some sunlight.
17:00 [Sildir (Tris)] And he's a vampire, of course, so he burns up. Even Rictavio says it's just a story, nothing more. And then, let's see, we also approach the hunters.
17:00 [Sildir (Tris)] They agree that they'll help us out a little bit by letting us know what they see. And— Remind me again what exactly— That they'll lay down some traps.
18:12 [DM (Aarya)] What we got from them, rather.
18:15 [Sildir (Tris)] So they don't know much about the disappearances. They confirm that silver works against werewolves. They agree to lay out some traps for us and that they'll keep us posted on any strange sightings.
18:15 [Sildir (Tris)] They let us know that they got silver because they're the Baron's wolf hunters, but otherwise silver is pretty controlled in this town. But they also tell us that if we flatter the Baron, we'll get what we want.
18:34 [DM (Aarya)] Okay, cool.
18:37 [Sildir (Tris)] And that is actually the end of the summary. We go upstairs, go to sleep, long rest, level up.
18:44 [DM (Aarya)] Nice, very good. Okay, very good recap. That took a bit, but very detailed.

23:25 [DM (Aarya)] I gotta do some finagling. Why are the tokens being so weird? Oh, it's because, I see why.
23:25 [DM (Aarya)] Man, who's missing in this?
24:32 [Ember (Spurthi)] I can see two tokens for me.
24:35 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, there's a lower floor and an upper floor. It's kind of confusing, but should be okay. Yeah, so you guys have two rooms given to you to bunk for the night.
24:35 [DM (Aarya)] There's this lower room here with four beds and this room over here with two. I'll let you guys decide really quick who bunked with whom for the night. But otherwise, you all find yourselves awakening in the early hours of the morning.
24:35 [DM (Aarya)] Hearing the faint sounds of shuffling around from below. Presumably, Erwin and Danica are getting ready for the day. So yeah, with that, I'll let you guys take it away.
25:24 [Sildir (Tris)] Maybe I'll just have bunked with Sililis.
25:30 [DM (Aarya)] In the one room, the two bedroom?
25:34 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah, sure.
25:38 [DM (Aarya)] So, Sildir in your room, which you had stayed with Sililis for the past night. You awaken to find that Sililis is gone. And you see left on his bed, you kind of see it out of the corner of your eye, on the floor.
25:38 [DM (Aarya)] Kind of poking out from underneath the bed is an old-looking flute. Let me find that and put it there.
26:17 [Sildir (Tris)] There was a note and a flute? Or just the flute?
26:19 [DM (Aarya)] No, just the flute. No note. Hopefully that drops it.
26:19 [DM (Aarya)] It's being a little bit slow.
26:38 [Sildir (Tris)] You can just store it in my inventory if you want. I'll RP out the rest.
26:43 [DM (Aarya)] Did it make it to your inventory? Let me find it.
26:47 [Sildir (Tris)] I'll let you know if it's there. I don't see it there. Well, I guess while you're doing that.
27:04 [DM (Aarya)] You find that and the rest in your room. Amber, you notice in the bed next to you where Irina was asleep, you find that she is gone. And that there is a note on her bed.
27:27 [Ember (Spurthi)] Is it in my inventory as well?
27:30 [DM (Aarya)] No, I'm just going to tell you what it says. So, you look at the note and you find it is written by Irina. And it says that she got up early in the morning to try to find some kind of help for her people.
27:30 [DM (Aarya)] She's hoping to find aid somewhere in town, either from the Birdomaster or someone else. And Sylilis volunteered to go with her.
28:03 [Speaker 7] Okay.
28:10 [DM (Aarya)] What? Who said that? Oh.
28:16 [Saturno (Steph)] That was my reaction. Where is she? I feel like we went to sleep and now she's gone.

49:14 [DM (Aarya)] okay, cool. So, you make your way down the streets, and as you're walking through the streets of Vallaki, you see a scene playing out before you. You hear the sound of a winning horse from down the street, and the townsfolk around freeze and fall silent.
49:14 [DM (Aarya)] And you see a small procession carrying on down the street. Let's see... You see a pretty, stern-looking man...
49:14 [DM (Aarya)] Walking down the street. He's wearing some pretty fine-looking robes, and a very shiny-looking breastplate, and strapped to his side is an elegantly adorned rapier. And he's followed by three guards, and the guards are led by a particularly intimidating-looking man.
49:14 [DM (Aarya)] You see that this man is... he must be close to seven feet tall. He's bald, has some pretty messy-looking stubble, and notably, he has a large silver battleaxe strapped to his back, and his right arm is covered in robes.
49:14 [DM (Aarya)] It's hidden beneath his robes, though it does seem to be abnormally large. Also, you see the man in front, the fancy-dressed man, is flanked also by two mean-looking mastiffs. So let me get all those tokens out.

51:24 [DM (Aarya)] So you see the man in front is riding a chestnut horse, and as he's riding forward, you see an old, frightened-looking woman, wearing pretty threadbare commoners clothes, has stumbled forward and fallen into a puddle of mud a few feet away in front. The horse comes to an abrupt halt, the procession stops, and you see the scary-looking man behind steps forward and scowls intimidatingly at her. You hear the man in front angrily scolding this woman and says, filthy peasant woman, don't stain my cloaks.
51:24 [DM (Aarya)] And you see the woman pleading with him, please, please Baron Vargas, please release my son, he didn't mean it, he's innocent. And you hear this man, who apparently is Baron Vargas, says to her, I'm afraid that young man needs rehabilitation, he is being taken care of for now. You will leave him be, unless you wish to join him.
