Lugdana and the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind
Player-known lore compiled from sessions 6, 21, and 22. Lugdana is a historical figure — the party has never met her.
Who Lugdana Was
- Lady Lugdana — paladin and champion of the Morning Lord (Session 21 @ 01:29:20; Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Active ~100 years ago ("a generation ago") (Session 21 @ 01:29:20)
- Led a crusade across Barovia, destroying vampire nests and spawn throughout the land (Session 21 @ 01:29:46; Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Called "the Morning Lord's stalwart" and "dawn-touched foe to the deep-lurking dark" in song (Session 6 @ 01:17:12)
- Depicted as gray-haired, wary of battle, with long sword and shield still polished and ready (Session 6 @ 01:17:12)
- Died at the end of her crusade; body never recovered (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Became an inspiration whose legend was spread by her companions after her fall (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Father Lucian Petrovich refers to her as "the Champion Lugdana" (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
The Crusade (~100 Years Ago)
What she accomplished
- Cleared vampire spawn spread across Barovia while Strahd von Zarovich was dormant — Strahd was not among those destroyed (Session 21 @ 01:29:46)
- Party framing: Strahd was "asleep" / dormant at the time, so he avoided the purge (Session 21 @ 01:29:46)
Morning Lord context
Lucian placed Lugdana inside a wider faith picture the party asked about at St. Andral's Church:
- The Morning Lord watches over Barovia, blesses the land with divine light, and guides worshippers toward peace (Session 21 @ 01:20:27)
- He is the counterpart to Mother Night — the goddess Ezra (Session 21 @ 01:21:57)
- Unlike Ezra (who has a name), the Morning Lord has no personal name that Lucian knows (Session 21 @ 01:25:08)
- The Morning Lord rarely manifests directly; he appoints champions to carry out his will (Session 21 @ 01:24:11)
- Lucian suggested the party themselves may be blessed champions meant to save the land and destroy the devil (Session 21 @ 01:24:11)
- Lugdana is the most recent named champion Lucian cited — the clearest example of the Morning Lord acting through a mortal ~100 years ago (Session 21 @ 01:29:20)
Party read on the gods: Several PCs noted Ezra seems more actively involved in their lives than the Morning Lord. Sildir still wants to leave no stone unturned regarding divine aid (Session 21 @ 01:28:40).
The Holy Symbol of Ravenkind
Lugdana's signature artifact — the party treats it as the most important piece of her story.
Description
- Platinum amulet shaped like a sunburst with an enormous ruby at the center (Session 6 @ 01:20:31)
- Official name: Holy Symbol of Ravenkind (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Also called her "blazing sigil of the sun" / "blazing holy symbol of the Morning Lord" (Session 21 @ 01:29:20; Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Shed the lights of the sun — used as a weapon against creatures of the night (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- In ballad: "ravenkind's token now blazing with light" turned the tide of her final battle (Session 6 @ 01:17:12)
Origin
- Gifted by an angel in the guise of a raven — hence the name "Ravenkind" (Session 6 @ 01:20:31; Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Lucian: having such a symbol now would inspire great hope for Barovia's people (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
Combat effects (per Lucian)
| Target | Effect |
|---|---|
| Lesser vampires | Sun-light is deadly; they perish immediately on exposure (Session 22 @ 00:48:00) |
| Strahd von Zarovich | Would not destroy him outright, but would undoubtedly affect him — he remains a monster of the night and the Morning Lord's light is his natural enemy (Session 22 @ 00:48:00) |
Party did not receive a specific ruling on werewolves vs. the symbol.
Fate — lost
- Lost when Lugdana fell at Yester Hill fighting Chernovog (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- She destroyed the demon but succumbed to her wounds; the symbol was lost with her (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- No one knows where the symbol is today (Session 6 @ 01:20:31)
- Her body was never recovered (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
The Final Battle — Yester Hill and Chernovog
Eliza's ballad (Game of Stories, Session 6)
Heard at Tser Pool during the Game of Stories — told by camp Vistani Eliza (Session 6 @ 01:17:12). Spelling normalized to canonical forms below; transcript dialogue used Chernivog and Yesterhill.
Framing
It is said within each raven flutters a lost soul, and that each raven's song tells a tale of ages past. They whisper, so listen closely. She takes a deep breath, and when she speaks again, her voice is quiet with an eerie melodic quality to it.
The ballad
Sing, ravens of Barovia, birthed from the mist and bathed in twilight.
Sing of Lugdana, the Morning Lord's stalwart, dawn-touched foe to the deep-lurking dark. The Holy Symbol of Ravenkind, her radiant testament, the warrior's beacon of faithful resolve.
Sing, ravens, of Chernovog's rise, named green-god and demon-lord upon Yester Hill. >
Lugdana, gray-haired, wary of battle, her long sword and shield yet polished and ready. Guided through shadows toward sacred ground, she clashed with Chernovog, their tempest-like dance.Sing, ravens, of Lugdana's last fury, of ravenkind's token now blazing with light, the battle's tide turning, a hero's brave cry, a final onslaught with divinity's grace.
The demon-lord banished, the warrior now fell, the wound at her side gouged too deep to bear.Sing, ravens, of light's final moments, a shadow descending from radiance on high.
Sing of the angel, black-feathered and beaked, the Morning Lord's angel reclaiming its gift, the symbol retaken in raven's claws held.Sing, ravens, you are the keepers, the watchers, the tellers of stories untold.
Sing, ravens, of Lugdana's memory, the shadows that lurk and heroes to come.
Aftermath of the tale
The DM ruled the story half-true (Session 6 @ 01:20:31).
DM-confirmed true portions:
- Lugdana was a Morning Lord paladin who bore the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind (Session 6 @ 01:20:31)
- Platinum sunburst amulet with enormous ruby; given by angel-as-raven (Session 6 @ 01:20:31)
- She fell at Yester Hill; symbol's fate unknown afterward (Session 6 @ 01:20:31)
Likely false / unconfirmed ballad portion:
- The angel reclaiming the symbol — Father Lucian Petrovich's account says the symbol was lost, not recovered by divine intervention (Session 22 @ 00:48:00). Party should treat the reclamation verse as unconfirmed.
From Lucian (Session 22)
- Demon described as a "terrible demon lord" on Yester Hill (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- She successfully destroyed the demon lord, then died of injuries (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
Companions and Legacy
Livius Martikov
- Skilled archer on Lugdana's crusade (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Moved between treetops with such grace it looked like flying (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- After her fall, spread her legend with Ismark the Great (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Died of old age long after the crusade (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Unconfirmed: Any link to present-day Urwin Martikov / Davian Martikov (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
Ismark the Great
- Accomplished swordsman who fought shoulder to shoulder with Lady Lugdana (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Spread her legend with Livius; died of old age (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Ancestor of current burgomaster Ismark Kolyanovich (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Statue in Barovia Village town square — party saw it on first arrival (Session 4 @ 00:11:14; Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Statue is eroded; much of his legend has diminished over time (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
Party reaction: Sildir realized "the Great" meant demon-slaying companion of Lugdana, not merely a local hero (Session 22 @ 00:48:00). Party floated revisiting Ismark to learn whether anything was left behind from Ismark the Great (Session 22 @ 00:48:00).
Barovia Village connection
- Lucian: Strahd turned his eye on Barovia Village given its history there (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Irredel: that history helps explain why the devil's wrath fell so hard on the village (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Sildir tied this to Strahd's infatuation with Ireena Kolyana as additionally strange given that history (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
Raven Lore (Related)
Mercurio asked his raven (Pepito/Bebito) about the tale; the bird nudged and crowed quietly (Session 6 @ 01:19:31). No further raven–Lugdana connection has been established.
Morning Lord Scriptures (Pending)
The party has asked repeatedly for written church records on Lugdana but has not confirmed receiving them as of Session 22's end.
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| Session 21 | Mercurio asked for scripture; Lucian said return later that night when less occupied (Session 21 @ 01:30:31) |
| Session 22 (~11 p.m.) | Lucian confirmed scriptures are available; gave extended oral history (Session 22 @ 00:48:00) |
| Session 22 (pre-midnight) | Sildir requested all scriptures Lucian can provide; Lucian promised delivery before the party leaves — then midnight werewolf crisis interrupted (Session 22 @ 00:48:00) |
Status: Scriptures promised but delivery not recorded before session end.
How the Party Learned This
- Session 4 — Barovia Village town square: statue of Ismark the Great seen (meaning unknown then) (Session 4 @ 00:11:14)
- Session 6 — Tser Pool: Eliza's ballad (half-true); DM confirms core facts (Session 6 @ 01:17:12)
- Session 21 — St. Andral's Church: Lucian names champion ~100 years ago; crusade vs vampire spawn; scriptures offered (Session 21 @ 01:29:20)
- Session 22 — St. Andral's Church: Lucian's full legend — symbol, Yester Hill, companions; scriptures still pending (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
