Session 14 - Transcript

00:00 [DM (Aarya)] All right. And now we're live. Okay.
00:00 [DM (Aarya)] Welcome, everyone, to Phantom Chain Session 14. Would anyone like to start us off with a recap of last session?
00:13 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah, I can do it. But I wanted to know, can you reframe, like, how many days we have left for certain things? So, like, I think tonight is when we're supposed to meet the Wacktors.
00:13 [Sildir (Tris)] And when do we need to get, when do we need to do the ceremony with Iridel to make sure that she doesn't transform?
00:34 [DM (Aarya)] Yes, good question. So, right now, in-game, it is the 6th of Nayavar, which is, like, the calendar system, like, a month in the calendar system in Virovia. And it is, like, about, you're still, like, in the morning-ish, probably, like, 11 a.m. or so in the day. Where you are at the tower is, like, about two hours from Vallaki. And the dinner that you're meeting Lady Valktor at is at 6 p.m. on this, like, the same day in-game. And the Festival of the Blazing Sun that the Baron is hosting in Vallaki, where he mandated attendance for all lock-ins, that is on the 9th.
00:34 [DM (Aarya)] So, three days from now. And also, that night at midnight is the full moon. So, you have three days, basically.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] Awesome. Okay, cool. So, I am gonna turn down some of this volume for now so I don't hear myself talking throughout this whole recap.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] And here we go. All right. So, last session, we started back up.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] The gang was split up, but we started from the point of view of Solalis Mercurio and Saturdo, who went back to the tavern to retrieve supplies. So, yeah, relevantly in that scene, we learned about Friends of the Feather and that Erwin is kind of associated with this group of ravens. We don't know too much more than that, but we know that ravens are even better for us than we thought.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] There's kind of, like, a network of ravens throughout the land, and Erwin has some eyes and ears through that. Also, just to recap a conversation we had with Erwin, which kind of nicely recapped the four groups investigating the disappearances, there's Legally Distinct Batman, there's the Acrobat, who has a bright blue bird logo on his chest, the ravens, and then our party. And we've learned since that the Acrobat's name, I know the non-legally distinct name, can you, Arya, what is the name in here?
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] Nightingale. Thank you. But the crew heads back to the hideout, or that group of three heads back to the hideout with the additional supplies from Erwin.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] The party is reunited. We have a toast to our success here, and we start planning for the next day. We decide that we're going to go to the Wizard Tower.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] So we wake up at dawn, and Mercurio and Saturno both have a nice little breakfast of wine and toast. The group heads out. Solaus and Erdil hang back because Erwin is going to send helpers to build up the new hideout, and they're also going to keep an eye on Udo.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] So they're doing a lot at the base. The rest of the group makes their way towards Lake Beartok. Let's see.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] Along the path, we discuss the urgency of getting the Wolf's Bane. We contemplate the Wizard will be friendly, aggressive, or if he's even still alive. We discuss a bit about the merits of fireballs and how dangerous they could be.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] And let's see. So Saturno is keeping a very close eye on our surroundings, so she's able to hear some footsteps coming towards us from the path up ahead. Once Ember is alerted to this, she begins focusing her energy to try to hear their thoughts, and Mercurio uses his familiar to get a bird's-eye view of the people up ahead.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] We see that they have some crossbows, and they have some blood on them, hunting knives, and they also have a bunch of pots and pans. So we kind of assume that they're just hunters. It makes sense.
01:36 [Sildir (Tris)] The mind read from Ember detects some concern from them and an intense feeling of desire, but they both look happy to see us. Maybe just a little too happy. And yeah.
05:08 [DM (Aarya)] I don't think it was desire specifically. I think it was hunger is how I phrased it. But yeah.
05:13 [Sildir (Tris)] Oh, sure.
05:15 [DM (Aarya)] Maybe I'm remembering wrong.
05:17 [Sildir (Tris)] I feel like I wouldn't have wrote desire unless you said that, but it doesn't really matter. Desire, hunger, you know. At the end of the day, they were hungry.
05:17 [Sildir (Tris)] They did want to eat us, so spoiler alert, people. But we did talk with them a little bit first, and they warned us of this crazy redhead on the road who's walking around with a wand that can blow holes in people. So we're going to keep a lookout for her, but we find out that there's dangerous things sitting right in front of us, and we get a whole little moment where there is a reference to the great Kendrick Lamar.
05:17 [Sildir (Tris)] That thing. So we end up fighting them. It turns out they lose their lives, not us losing our lives like they threatened.
05:17 [Sildir (Tris)] And I wrote here that Mercurio really set us up for victory. So shout out, Mercurio. Good job.
06:19 [DM (Aarya)] One million spells.
06:23 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah. So good job. We owe you some wine or something.
06:23 [Sildir (Tris)] I don't know what else we could get you. But yeah, combat's over. We keep moving to Lake Beartok, and we find that there is a very obvious tower there, which is funny because the werewolves in conversation told us there was no tower, so they really were obviously lying to us because you couldn't miss this thing.
06:23 [Sildir (Tris)] It looks pretty old maintained, but outside there is a wagon that's covered in mud, mud that is relatively fresh. There's also a sign on the wagon that says, keep out. Home and property of Esmeralda Davener.
06:23 [Sildir (Tris)] Trespassers will be incinerated. And we make the assumption that this must belong to the wolf. Maybe we do, maybe we don't.
06:23 [Sildir (Tris)] We're going to learn this either way in about one second into this campaign, but I wrote that this is the crazy redhead wizard we were talking about that owns this wagon. Um, I think we talked about that as a party, but I don't recall. I think maybe there was like a drawing or something.
07:35 [DM (Aarya)] I think there was speculation.
07:37 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah.
07:38 [DM (Aarya)] Totally not meta-influenced speculation, but yeah, speculation.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah, no, right? Definitely not. I never do that.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] But for now, the wagon looks empty. So the party is like very spooked by this wizard, and I think we kind of built up a lot in our mind, talking about fireballs and running into werewolves and hearing about the redheaded boomstick girl. And, um, everyone, no one really wants to knock on this door.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] So Sildur strides up and knocks, everyone's like taking cover. And then the door has this like wax seal. Well, maybe not a wax seal, but there is a seal on it.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] And it starts providing a message. And it's a series of riddles that all kind of have the same answer. And the answer to it is power.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] So as soon as we kind of lock that in, the seal shifts. It says Kazan, which I think we know to be the name of the wizard that lived there at some point. And the door opens.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] We headed into the tower. And as we do, Mercurio is using detect magic to keep an eye on things. But we find pretty quickly that magic doesn't really work in here.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] There's some sort of anti-magic special going on. But there are several statues surrounding a platform that seems hoistable by a chains, four chains, and there's four statues. And so they, you know, these end up being magical statues, people.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] They take the chains for us and start hauling us up. And as we go up one floor at a time, we see that the second and third floor is extremely run down, pretty much disgusting, like rotting away. Later on, they were so rotted that later on a party member fell through.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] But let's not get ahead of ourselves. We make it to the top floor and we start kind of looking around. This place is like definitely lived in.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] It's, you know, more neat. Looks like, you know, actually livable. There is one more statue, though, that also turns out to be alive.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] And it's about to fight us when a voice out from under the bed yells that, yeah, suit of armor. True. Yells that it seems like so stop.
07:41 [Sildir (Tris)] And the armor does stop. And guess who it is? It's Arabelle, someone we've been looking for for quite some time.
10:22 [DM (Aarya)] I think technically in game it was like two or three days in game. But IRL it's been like several sessions. But yeah.
10:31 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah. Yeah, I feel like we're playing this campaign out in real time. So it feels like a long time.
10:39 [DM (Aarya)] This is not the real time campaign, but yeah, I get you.
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah. True. But yeah.
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] Anyway. So we let her know that we have been looking for her. We have met Lavash.
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] We have met Madame Eva. And Arabelle kind of says that she has been expecting us even. And she seems to have at least some of Madame Eva's gift to be determined how much or how little or if it will develop.
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] But anyway, we let her know that we really came here while we were actively investigating her. We needed to do something more pressing, which is cure our friend. Did we actually say that?
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] I think we did. She's smart. She kind of figures it out, right?
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] Like, I think we were talking about it. We were saying we need some and then she started freaking out and we kind of spilled the beans. We also learned that the bluebird acrobat, aka Nightingale, is the one that brought her here to keep her safe after she was kidnapped once already, presumably by the same group that is causing the other disappearances.
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] It looks like they're after Sears too. And what else? What else?
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] Notably, we do hand her the teeth that we've been carrying around and she is able to determine that they are not wolf teeth. Nonetheless, we're still kind of referring to the shadowy group as the court of wolves. Um, well, she's a child, okay?
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] She should like these things. Anyway, we ask about Kazan. She says that Kazan is definitely dead.
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] Let's see. Eber gets a natural 20 on some strange symbols that we saw in Bluebird's notebook, aka Nightingale, sorry. And she realizes that the structure and format of symbols look similar but they're not the runes.
10:42 [Sildir (Tris)] Sildur asks if there's a toy she would want in particular from Blinsky and she says probably like an action figure of the bird boy. And Saturna also gives her a deck of cards to keep her busy in the meanwhile.
13:16 [DM (Aarya)] Speaking of, I don't know if I did this last time but did I give you inspiration for that, Saturna? Oh, no. Okay, you can take inspiration for that.
13:27 [Sildir (Tris)] So, um, dang, I feel like she could have used the inspiration based on what comes next. Because literally my next note is, well, she also does want some sweets. That does come between that and the next note.
13:27 [Sildir (Tris)] But the very next note after that is that we're about to leave and I guess Saturna, um, you know, what was Saturna thinking? Why did she want to do this backflip stuff?
13:52 [Saturno (Steph)] Um, well, Little Girl did say we were cool and I was like, hell yeah. So I wanted to further show that I was cool.
14:01 [Sildir (Tris)] Okay, so in a display of confidence and coolness, Saturna does a backflip but unfortunately there was a little natty one. It did end up pretty cool, you know. I'm not gonna lie, like, this is still pretty metal.
14:01 [Sildir (Tris)] But she lands straight on her back and crashes through all three of the, uh, floors. Taking the short or the fast way down at least and takes only 10 damage. So Saturna's pretty tough.
14:01 [Sildir (Tris)] Um, the statues at the bottom even look at her like, what just happened? Um, but we, you know, the people who are still up there ask Airbell about the wagon and she says she doesn't know who it belongs to or who Esmeralda is. We make our way down.
14:51 [DM (Aarya)] She does know that it sounds like a Vistani name, but yeah.
14:56 [Sildir (Tris)] Gotcha. But we make our way down, um, and we also on the way down discuss maybe getting some letters to her and just seeing what we can do to, like, enrich her life while she's kind of just stuck here.
15:10 [DM (Aarya)] Also remind me really quick, did y'all end up taking the note that had the symbols on it or no?
15:18 [Sildir (Tris)] Um, we kind of, I guess we, I have it in my notes, I don't know. I don't, I don't think we took it.
15:29 [DM (Aarya)] Okay, regardless, for simplicity, it's like, I was gonna say either you took it or like one of you just, like, copied it down on this crap piece of paper.
15:36 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah, I think we have it, like, scrawled down or maybe the nat 20 is enough for Ember to have it, like, burned into her brain or something. Like, that'll work. We just know it somehow.
15:36 [Sildir (Tris)] Um, but anywho, uh, we reached the bottom floor. Mercurial gives Cicerno a hand up and Sildur is stepping out the door and suddenly he's being held at gunpoint by a redheaded woman.
16:10 [DM (Aarya)] Okay, thank you for the recap. Very good. And with that, I'll bring us back to the scene at the tower.
16:10 [DM (Aarya)] Um, everyone's in Foundry now, right?
16:30 [Saturno (Steph)] Yeah, I think so. Yeah.
16:32 [DM (Aarya)] Okay. Um, yeah, it occurs to me that this could have been an opportunity for Savannah to reprise the role, but that's okay.
16:43 [Sildir (Tris)] True, actually, yeah.
16:48 [Saturno (Steph)] We'll do it. I'll talk to myself.
16:53 [DM (Aarya)] That'd be really something. Um, but yes, okay, so you find yourselves walking out of the tower, um, Mercu- or not Mercurial, Sildur leading the way out, um, and you are stopped just as you step across the threshold and, uh, Sildur, you find yourself staring down the dual barrels of a pistol leveled spherically at your face.
17:15 [Sildir (Tris)] And I know- I'm assuming I know what a pistol is, yeah?
17:17 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, I would say so. You've probably seen them around. They're not, like, common, probably, where you're from, but you're familiar at least.
17:25 [Sildir (Tris)] I've been around the block a time or two. All right. Whoa.
17:25 [Sildir (Tris)] Hi there.
17:32 [DM (Aarya)] Well, what have we here?
17:36 [Sildir (Tris)] Uh, can you put that thing down? I feel a lot more comfortable answering.
17:40 [DM (Aarya)] Well, I'd feel- I'd feel more comfortable if you answered some questions first. Namely this. What are you doing here with Goldie's kid?
17:52 [Sildir (Tris)] Goldie? Um, what do you mean, Goldie's kid?
17:54 [DM (Aarya)] The kid in the tower. The Vistani girl.
17:57 [Sildir (Tris)] Arabelle?
17:58 [DM (Aarya)] Yes.
18:00 [Sildir (Tris)] Well, I mean, we didn't really plan to see her in particular, but, uh, actually we do happen to be helping out Lavash. Lavash, you know Lavash? Maybe you can put the gun down now We're looking for his daughter, Arabelle, who's up there.
18:00 [Sildir (Tris)] He's been very concerned, but we still can't tell him anything.
18:20 [Mercurio (Gui)] And I have a very important quest to bring her a birthday present.
18:23 [Sildir (Tris)] Yes, Madam Eva, we spoke with her too. We need to get her a toy from Blinsky's. Who are you anyway?
18:23 [Sildir (Tris)] Hey, hey, I'm- Put that gun down, it's very aggressive.
18:34 [DM (Aarya)] I'm the one asking the questions here, all right? It's her. Give me a second.
18:37 [Sildir (Tris)] I mean, look, you can blast me, but you got all these people behind me here that are going to deal with you too, so let's just be peaceful.
18:43 [DM (Aarya)] Hey, don't tempt me, friend. Anyway, um- I ain't your friend, pal.
18:51 [Saturno (Steph)] She's gonna like- I don't say that, I don't say that. You know you don't say that.

18:59 [DM (Aarya)] She's gonna fiddle with something, like, around her neck. She pulls out a- you see that? She pulls out a pendant of sorts.
18:59 [DM (Aarya)] You see on it, there seems to be some kind of, like, wolfish-looking symbol, like, on a silver pendant, with a stain- like, some kind of, like, blood-stained mark on it. She, like, vaguely gestures it, like, in your direction, and studies it for a moment. And then she says, hmm, not glowing.
18:59 [DM (Aarya)] All right, so you aren't werewolves, at least.
19:29 [Sildir (Tris)] Ah.
19:30 [Mercurio (Gui)] Nope, that we're not. All right. We actually took care of a couple of them on the way here.
19:30 [Mercurio (Gui)] Yeah, we killed two. I think we're on the same team.
19:37 [DM (Aarya)] Two werewolves. Huh. Not bad.
19:37 [DM (Aarya)] Hmm. Maybe- maybe I judged you too harshly. And you'll- as she says that, you'll see that she, like, stops pointing the gun in Sildur's face, and just- kind of just, like, hefts it on her shoulder, and she takes, like, a more, like, relaxed stance, like, hip-cocked out, and just, like, kind of looks at you with a expression of amusement.
19:37 [DM (Aarya)] All right, then. What's your story? You working with Goldie?
20:04 [Sildir (Tris)] Well, I'll tell you what. The werewolves- you've built yourself a reputation around here with that- that boomstick. The werewolves really didn't- didn't like you.
20:04 [Sildir (Tris)] They told us that there was a crazy redhead with a wand that could blow holes in- in men. I don't think they've realized that it's just technology, but- Well, all the more to stoke the legend, as it were.

20:34 [Mercurio (Gui)] Well, I'm a bard, so I can- I'll sing about your boomstick over at the taverns tonight.
20:41 [DM (Aarya)] Hmm, I don't think it needs to go quite that far. This- this whole getup is for monsters. Oh, okay.
20:52 [Sildir (Tris)] Well, anyways, I'm assuming you're the fine owner of this wagon?
20:57 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, that would be mine. Now, I believe I did ask a question. What's your story here, and are you working with Goldie?

21:13 [DM (Aarya)] Ah, right. What's that- what's that stupid fucking name he uses these days? Nightingale?
21:18 [Sildir (Tris)] Nightingale, ah, so his real name is Goldie. Thank you, I like that. My last name is Goldenfield, actually, so.
21:25 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, if you meet him, do- do call him that, by the way. He loves it when people call him that.

21:30 [Sildir (Tris)] We are here- well, we've heard some stories about this wizard tower, and luckily, uh, we did find Arabelle. Unfortunately, we are gonna- we're deciding to keep our mouths shut for the time being, despite her family being quite worried for her. But I think it's in her best interest.
22:01 [Mercurio (Gui)] She's safe here, nobody knows where she is. If we take her back, we might just get kidnapped again.
22:06 [Sildir (Tris)] Or if we tell Lavash, their information might leak, so.
22:12 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, Goldie did say that he was looking into some spooky group in Vallaki, but, hmm.
22:19 [Mercurio (Gui)] The Court of Wolves.
22:21 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, that's it. Sounds like a bunch of nonsense to me, but if he's- if he's on the trail, then there must be something to it.
22:31 [Mercurio (Gui)] We can second the story, we've been sort of dealing with them ourselves.
22:36 [DM (Aarya)] Oh? And what did you find?
22:40 [Mercurio (Gui)] Not too much yet, just that they're behind a bunch of kidnappings, and there's some kind of freaky, you know, werewolf cult or something. A werewolf cult? Not quite werewolves, I guess.
22:40 [Mercurio (Gui)] They're- but they are something like that.
22:59 [Speaker 7] Huh.
23:01 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah, elite werewolves who supposedly run the, uh, the society from the shadows in Vallaki.
23:10 [DM (Aarya)] Werewolf cult, huh? Hmm. Well, that's strange.
23:13 [Mercurio (Gui)] Hey, who has the teeth? Can somebody pull out the teeth?
23:18 [Sildir (Tris)] Saturno?
23:19 [DM (Aarya)] What, you're trying to flash me a smile or something? I don't need a kid.

23:23 [Sildir (Tris)] Sorry, uh, no, we have some teeth, but our friend here is dazed, she just fell through the floor.
23:27 [Mercurio (Gui)] Yeah, that's not really- that's not really clearing it up. I'd like to get your opinion on these- these teeth that we plucked from these weird, uh, werewolf cultists.
23:38 [DM (Aarya)] Why, they like- you took it like a trophy?
23:42 [Mercurio (Gui)] More like our investigation, but- Yeah, the investigation.
23:47 [Saturno (Steph)] I changed my story very quickly after literally just saying yes.
23:52 [Mercurio (Gui)] Do these look like werewolf teeth to you?
23:55 [DM (Aarya)] Um, give them here. She, like, holds her hand out. I pass them over.
23:55 [DM (Aarya)] Okay, um, she's gonna, like, turn it over in her hands a few times, um, just, like, study it for a second, and then she'll say, you guys are idiots. These aren't werewolf teeth, these are vampire teeth.
24:19 [Saturno (Steph)] Vampire teeth? How do you know? Well, they're wearing, like, wolf skulls.
24:19 [Saturno (Steph)] Huh.
24:26 [Sildir (Tris)] Maybe it's just vampires posing as a court of wolves.
24:29 [Saturno (Steph)] Yeah, maybe they're just posing. Well, we killed them with grizzlies.
24:32 [Mercurio (Gui)] A court of wolves is actually a court of bats.
24:35 [DM (Aarya)] Court of bats, huh, that's funny. If there were such a thing, then, well, they- it's pretty obvious who their leader would be.
24:44 [Sildir (Tris)] All the animals have courts now. What's next, the court of owls?
24:51 [DM (Aarya)] Nah, that sounds ridiculous. Who would make such a thing? There's a court of ravens, so I guess.
24:58 [Saturno (Steph)] Who would? Who would make such a thing? Who?
25:03 [Sildir (Tris)] That's funny, guys. Well, look, I mean, we were just talking with the girl upstairs. She only mentioned, uh, who you call Goldie.
25:03 [Sildir (Tris)] Have you- are you just staying outside? Have you even talked to the girl? She didn't seem to mention anybody else.
25:18 [DM (Aarya)] Eh, I told Goldie I'd keep an eye on her here and there. I've been patrolling this route anyway, considering the uptick in werewolf activity.
25:28 [Sildir (Tris)] That's good of you. It is- seems, uh, does seem a little dangerous around here.
25:33 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, just a little bit, right?
25:35 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah, just a little bit. Just, you know, just several werewolves lurking around at any given moment, but yeah. Yeah, it is- A little dangerous.
25:44 [DM (Aarya)] It's quite odd. It's not normal for them to be venturing quite this far out from their usual hunting grounds.
25:51 [Sildir (Tris)] Oh, uh, what are their usual hunting grounds?
25:57 [DM (Aarya)] Well, normally they stick to the other side of Lake Baratok over there, but they've been getting bolder, it seems like. Probably owing to some change in leadership or something, I don't know. Werewolf politics are so...

26:17 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah.
26:21 [Sildir (Tris)] Do you use silver bullets?
26:25 [DM (Aarya)] Um, you notice her, like, kind of, um, just, like, show you the gun a little bit, and you kind of see that, like, the barrels of the gun seem to be, like, inlaid with silver. And she looks to you and she says, yeah, something like that.
26:44 [Sildir (Tris)] Must get expensive.
26:47 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, I mean, it's not cheap, you're all right about that. But I think the work warrants it.
26:57 [Mercurio (Gui)] Say, where do you get your silver from?

27:15 [Sildir (Tris)] Well, I don't know, we asked the, uh, we asked Erebil up there, who's definitely, who's definitely Avistani, uh, about you, and she said your name doesn't sound Avistani, at least.

27:45 [Sildir (Tris)] Well, we do need some silver, though. Uh, we, you know, we have one.
