The Morning Lord and Mother Night (Ezra)
Player-known lore compiled from sessions 4–22. Speculation labeled Party believes… / Unconfirmed:. For champion history and the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind, see Lugdana and the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind. For pre-Strahd goddesses, see The Ladies Three and the First Folk.
Overview
Barovia's divine landscape includes powers older than Strahd von Zarovich and distinct from his rule (Session 21 @ 00:51:35). The party's clearest framing of a paired opposition comes from Father Lucian Petrovich:
| Figure | Role (per Lucian) |
|---|---|
| Morning Lord | God of light; watches over Barovia; blesses the land with divine light; guides worshippers toward peace (Session 21 @ 01:20:27) |
| Mother Night (Ezra) | His counterpart — goddess of the mists (Session 21 @ 01:21:57) |
Neither deity has been encountered directly. Knowledge comes from priests, Lady Fiona Wachter's warlock pact, tarokka, ballads, and party inference.
The Morning Lord
Domains and epithets
- Lord of blessed light and patron of new beginnings — Father Donavich's funeral prayer at Barovia Village (Session 4 @ 02:18:59)
- Watches over the land of Barovia, blesses it with divine light, and ushers worshippers into peace (Session 21 @ 01:20:27)
- Lucian: a shadow has fallen over Barovia because of the devil, but as a priest of the Morning Lord it remains his duty to guide his flock into the light (Session 21 @ 01:21:25)
No personal name
- Lucian knows no personal name for the Morning Lord beyond the title itself — "He is the Morning Lord… not as such" (Session 21 @ 01:25:08)
- Party noted the asymmetry: Ezra has a name, but her divine counterpart does not (Session 21 @ 01:25:14)
How the Morning Lord acts
- Rarely manifests directly in ways mortals can see (Session 21 @ 01:24:11)
- Instead appoints champions to carry out his will (Session 21 @ 01:24:11)
- Lucian suggested the party may be blessed champions meant to save the land and destroy the devil (Session 21 @ 01:24:11)
- The clearest named example: Lugdana, paladin champion ~100 years ago — see Lugdana and the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind (Session 21 @ 01:29:20)
Party read: Several PCs felt Ezra seems more actively involved in their lives than the Morning Lord — a "deadbeat god" compared to the "mislady" who "seems to actually be doing things" (Session 21 @ 01:28:11, 01:28:40). Sildir still wants to leave no stone unturned regarding divine aid (Session 21 @ 01:28:40).
Holy symbol and imagery
- Sunburst — standard Morning Lord holy-symbol form (Session 4 @ 02:18:59; Session 9 @ 00:28:49)
- St. Andral's Church altar carved with a proud sunburst (Session 9 @ 00:28:49)
- Grave markers: small pebbles arranged as a rising sunburst (Morning Lord sunburst pebbles at refugee graves near Argynvostholt approach) (Session 7 @ 00:44:34)
- Doru wore Father Donavich's gold sunburst medallion on a leather cord (Session 4 @ 01:36:51)
- Lugdana's Holy Symbol of Ravenkind — platinum sunburst amulet — is the legendary champion artifact tied to this faith (Session 6 @ 01:20:31)
Distinct symbol: A masked Court-of-Wolves helper bore a fiery sun-with-face holy symbol — Mercurio's religion check found similarities to Morning Lord sunburst imagery but judged it a separate, distinct symbol (Session 10 @ 01:44:45). Not confirmed as Morning Lord worship.
Worship sites and sanctuary
| Site | What the party knows |
|---|---|
| St. Andral's Church (Vallaki) | Centuries-old stone church; Morning Lord sunburst altar; head pastor Father Lucian Petrovich (Session 9 @ 00:28:49). Hallowed grounds block vampires and undead — Ismark Kolyanovich directed escort here for Ireena Kolyana (Session 4 @ 01:02:36). Undead could not pursue during Wachter evacuation (Session 16 @ 01:37:20). Dr. Rudolph van Richten confirmed hallowed spell of church grounds keeps congregants safe from undead (Session 17 @ 00:10:23). Lucian restored wards after his rescue; Feast of Saint Andral preparations resumed 9th (Session 18 @ 02:50:10) |
| Barovia Village church | Father Donavich — priest of the Morning Lord (Session 4 @ 01:17:18) |
| Abbey of St. Markovia (Krezk) | Donavich: once a holy place where priests of this land congregated in prayer to the Morning Lord; "may yet still offer some protection" (Session 4 @ 02:15:10). Lucian later suggested its abbot for lycanthropy counsel (Session 18 @ 02:38:37) |
Saint Andral vs. Morning Lord: Milivoj attributed the church's hallowing to Saint Andral — legends say he gave his life defending the Vallakians from the devil; by his dying breath he hallowed the church grounds so creatures of the night and undead may not enter. Bryce cannot replicate that hallowing (Session 15 @ 00:32:14). The Morning Lord is the faith Lucian and Donavich serve; Saint Andral is the namesake of the feast and the hallowing legend.
Priests and faith in practice
- Father Donavich — once heard the Morning Lord's voice in prayer; after giving his holy symbol to Doru for the revolt, he no longer hears the Morning Lord's voice and was in no condition to perform prayers until the symbol was returned (Session 4 @ 01:18:43). After Doru's restoration: "It seems the Morning Lord has blessed him" (Session 4 @ 02:15:10)
- Father Lucian Petrovich — priest of the Morning Lord at St. Andral's Church; offered scriptures on Morning Lord champions and Lugdana when less occupied (Session 21 @ 01:30:31; Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
- Doru chanted a Morning Lord prayer during a blood test; whispered "Gertruda" (Session 4 @ 01:44:09)
Secular Morning Lord imagery
- Festival of the Blazing Sun — Baron Vargas Vallakovich's mandated town-square festival (Session 10 @ 01:00:30). Party called it "festival of the morning glory" when roleplaying (Session 19 @ 00:38:46). Canceled when Fiona took power 9th (Session 20 @ 00:11:47)
- 9th of Neyavr: Festival of the Blazing Sun, Feast of Saint Andral, and full moon at midnight all coincided (Session 15 @ 00:30:46)
Light vs. the devil
- Lucian: the Morning Lord himself rarely fights the devil directly — champions carry that burden (Session 21 @ 01:24:11)
- On Holy Symbol of Ravenkind vs. Strahd von Zarovich: would not destroy him outright but would undoubtedly affect him — he is a monster of the night and the Morning Lord's light is his natural enemy (Session 22 @ 00:48:00)
Mother Night — Ezra
Names and nature
| Epithet | Source |
|---|---|
| Ezra | Lady Fiona Wachter (Session 20 @ 01:08:34) |
| Mother Night | Fiona; matches tarokka Myrmidon reading (Session 20 @ 01:08:34; Session 6 @ 02:52:00) |
| Lady Ezra | Fiona's phrasing (Session 20 @ 01:10:00) |
| Mother of the Knights | Fiona, en route to windmill (Session 20 @ 01:08:34) |
| Lady of the Night | Party paraphrase (Session 22 recap; Session 21 @ 01:25:14) |
| Goddess of the mists | Fiona (Session 21 @ 00:53:51) |
Transcript variant "Lady Knight" at Session 21 @ 00:53:51 — party notes normalize to Mother Night / Ezra.
Counterpart to the Morning Lord
- Lucian: "Just as the Morning Lord is the god of light, there is also Mother Night herself — the goddess Ezra, his counterpart" (Session 21 @ 01:21:57)
- They are different figures with different ways; Lucian would not judge a deity but noted Ezra is not known to offer sanctuary the way the Morning Lord does (Session 21 @ 01:24:11)
- Lucian urged caution regarding Fiona's Ezra relationship (Session 21 @ 01:24:11)
Not one of the Ladies Three
- Fiona confirmed Ezra is not one of the Ladies Three (The Seeker, The Weaver, The Huntress) — "something else entirely" (Session 21 @ 00:53:51)
- Fiona refused to recount Ezra's full tale when pressed (Session 21 @ 00:53:51)
- Fiona: serving Strahd is not in Ezra's nature (Session 21 @ 00:53:51)
See The Ladies Three and the First Folk for the separate Old Gods thread. Fiona could not say whether the Ladies Three moved the mists that brought the party to Barovia — much lore was lost (Session 21 @ 00:53:51).
Lady Fiona Wachter's pact
First named en route to Old Bonegrinder Windmill 9th afternoon (Session 20 @ 01:08:34):
- Fiona has a warlock pact with Ezra (Session 20 @ 01:08:34)
- Learned arcane arts through Ezra; pledged faith to her and found renewed resolve to bring peace and freedom to Vallaki (Session 20 @ 01:10:00)
- Ezra makes no demands misaligned with Fiona's own interests (Session 20 @ 01:10:00)
- Demonstrated flame in palm when discussing her talents (Session 20 @ 00:50:48)
- Night hags could detect her pact nature — reason she could not enter the windmill with the party (Session 20 @ 01:06:42)
- Imp familiar Majesto relays messages; stayed invisible on a party shoulder during the hag fight (Session 20 @ 02:05:38)
- Unconfirmed: whether Ezra is accessible to others in Barovia beyond Fiona's pact (Session 20 @ 01:08:34)
- Fiona cannot simply "give Ezra a ring" or contact her on demand — "the whims of the deities are fickle" (Session 21 @ 00:57:58)
Urwin Martikov: not religious; has not encountered Ezra directly — only heard the name. Mercurio disclosed Fiona's Ezra pact; Urwin asked Keepers to watch Fiona (Session 21 @ 01:48:08, 01:49:56).
Mists and the party's arrival
The party is not originally from Barovia — swept here by mysterious mists (Session 21 @ 00:56:46).
| Claim | Who |
|---|---|
| Maybe Ezra's mists brought the party here | Party believes… — Mercurio to Fiona (Session 21 @ 00:56:46) |
| Perhaps by Ezra's will, brought to be pitted against the devil | Fiona speculated (Session 21 @ 00:57:31) |
| Not something Fiona has known Ezra to do | Fiona (Session 21 @ 00:57:58) |
Session 22 recap: party wondered whether the mist that brought them relates to Ezra as goddess of the mist (Session 22 @ 00:48:00 area — transcript recap).
Lucian was curious when the party said they were swept by "her mist" and had met Ezra's followers in town (Session 21 @ 01:22:57, 01:23:30). Party pointed to Fiona as "at least one big fan" (Session 21 @ 01:23:40).
Tarokka — Myrmidon card
Madame Eva's reading (Session 6 @ 02:52:00):
"Look for a den of wolves in the hills overlooking a mountain lake. The treasure belongs to Mother Night."
- Card: Five of Swords · The Myrmidon — holy symbol of great hope (Session 6 @ 02:52:00)
- Party links Mother Night → Ezra after Fiona's revelation (Session 20 @ 01:08:34)
- Not found as of Session 22 — see Madame Eva's Tarokka Reading
The Bishop card (sword of sunlight, amber doors) is a separate Morning Lord–themed treasure lead — not confirmed as Ezra-related (Session 6 @ 02:52:00).
Party comparisons and caution
- Ezra more active than Morning Lord — recurring party impression (Session 21 @ 01:28:40)
- Lucian urged caution around Fiona's Ezra ties; Mercurio noted Fiona could hide power, spells, or identity (Session 21 @ 01:24:11, 01:51:53)
- Party asked Lucian about Ezra in the house of the Morning Lord because of Irredel's dreams and Ezra encounters (Session 21 @ 01:22:38)
Unconfirmed: bone-throne woman (Irredel)
Separate thread — not confirmed as Ezra:
- Session 19 dream: bone-throne woman in pelts/red war paint offered strength; Irredel woke taller, stronger, hairier, burning hunger (Session 19 @ 00:17:37)
- Session 18: Court hideout bone-throne chamber — obsidian floor, marble altar to a dark entity; Irredel drawn to throne (Session 18 @ 01:44:40)
- Session 22 full moon: same feral woman imagery; Irredel accepted her offer in vision; told party she overcame via sheer will without elaborating (Session 22 @ 00:58:00, 01:26:11)
Lucian heard of Irredel's dream of a woman offering power — difficult to say if related to her lycanthropy (Session 21 @ 01:19:17). No source has identified this figure as Ezra.
