Session 18 - Transcript

00:01 [DM (Aarya)] All right, welcome to Phantom Chain session 18. Tristan, would you like to get the recap rolling?
00:11 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah, sorry, I was making sure I could log in.
00:20 [DM (Aarya)] No worries.
00:22 [Sildir (Tris)] What the fuck? Why is there combat noise?
00:25 [DM (Aarya)] Is there combat noise?
00:27 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah, I guess we're in a combat still.
00:29 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] Okay, so session 17, where it ended. Just kidding, it kept going. But we spent the night in the church and basically, yeah.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] What'd you say? Wrong campaign. Right, that's for Artrium, I forgot.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] Oh no. No, just kidding, just kidding. That's fucked up.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] Anyways, so we spent the night at the church and during this time, Iridel has a dream. She's running in the forest, running away from beasts. As she's running, she comes into a clearing and sees the full moon, creates a hunger within her.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] She wakes up and faintly feels the hunger, but it's not as overwhelming. Anyways, we wake up, all of us, and we're greeted by Milivoj, who lets us know we'll be safe as long as we're on church grounds. He tells us that Father Bryce is waiting for us upstairs with the Wachter family, that he wants to meet with us.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] So we go upstairs and then Father Bryce basically tells us to go back downstairs so he could speak fully in private. So up and down, very church-like, honestly. Let's see.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] He takes us into the crypt, which we didn't know existed until now, unless you were in the last Strahd campaign, then you definitely knew the crypt existed, but you were wondering if it was still going to be there. At the far end of the crypt, well, it applies to you too. Maybe you do, maybe you don't.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] Show you how much you know. But in a coffin, staked to the coffin, is the remains of a vampire assassin. Probably dead at this point, but it seems like there was some interrogation going on.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] So Father Bryce starts to tell us the truth, but we learn that we're not talking to Father Bryce at all. Really, this was Nightingale the whole time. But he does tell us that Father Bryce is Batman, aka V for the sake of this campaign.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] V for vengeance, of course. But V needs our help. He went to the Maw of the Wolf alone, and he's probably in trouble.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] So Nightingale agrees to stay back and protect everybody. And Esmeralda is currently watching over Erebus, so she'll be fine. And we talk a little bit more about various things.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] We end up getting some holy water, and what else? He gives us some field rations. He lets us know some of the weaknesses of the zombies and thralls that we'll probably encounter.
00:32 [Sildir (Tris)] And then all the while, you know, Iridel is feeling pretty weak and hungry, and she makes demands for the meaty portions of Sildur's rations, which he obliges. Anyways, we make our way over to the lake and look for the Maw of the Wolf. Somebody gets a nat 20 on perception and notices that near the shore of the lake, there's a little grotto that totally looks like a wolf.
04:03 [DM (Aarya)] So we go in. There were a lot of nat 20s last session. It was crazy.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] Yeah. Anyways, as we are moving in, as Iridel gets closer to the door, mysteriously, there's some glowing red text that appears. We're able to translate it, and it says, blood of prey opens the way.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] So we begin discussing what that could be. But Saturno boldly does a little finger prick and wipes the blood, I think, on the wall. And she takes one point of damage, but the cave opens.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] So we descend into the Maw of the Wolf, with Iridel leading the way. Just prior to entering, we do a little bit of a look-see around to make sure we're not going to randomly step into a spike trap, and there's nothing there. Anyways, as we are entering, Sildur uses his divine sense, and he detects a lot of undead.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] Slowly throughout this session, we found that there was a group of 14 sitting around. I'll not spam you guys with that detail, but it was very suspenseful in the moment. Let's see.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] We also go around fighting a few of the assassins that are running around. We basically do a bunch of running around. There's a full moon room.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] There's some other puzzle rooms. We are not doing the puzzles, because why do that, when your DM will eventually shove you along by having the assassins open the moon door, which is kind of what we did. But we were all, I mean, I say that lightly.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] We were all very scared. We didn't want to go in any room, because we thought it would turn Iridel into the wolf. Very paranoid engineers, very interesting.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] Very decision-based, that we were avoiding the puzzles. But we were scared, yeah. Anyhoo, we keep on moving.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] We kind of explore the whole room. We go back to the moon room. We get across, you know, kind of just barely.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] I think there was one point Iridel had to like, expend every resource she had to get across. But it worked. We made it.
04:07 [Sildir (Tris)] Um, what would have happened to us if we fell in that pit, DM?
06:47 [DM (Aarya)] You would have died.
06:49 [Sildir (Tris)] Oh well. Anyways, to our left, we find a smooth obsidian door from the skulls. There's also like a little pool that might connect out to the lake.
06:49 [Sildir (Tris)] And we continue looking around, and we end up finding an alchemist lab, which is a very sophisticated one, including, in the lab, two tanks that contain humans that are seemingly barely alive. We pull them out. We get kind of nothing for it.
06:49 [Sildir (Tris)] They basically, we are able to determine that, you know, they're the next thralls. But they end up, I think we end up kind of mercy killing them, if I'm remembering correctly.
07:27 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, I remember that was your plan. I don't know if you actually did it yet. Did you?
07:30 [Saturno (Steph)] I thought Iridel, like, stabilized them.
07:33 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah, that's what it was.
07:34 [Sildir (Tris)] They were stabilized. Okay, so they were stabilized. As we're, you know, destroying the room, the alchemy room, because we find it to be an abomination, Sildur can feel the big bad presence getting closer.
07:34 [Sildir (Tris)] Iridel also picks up and finds a flask of alchemist's fire, and a notebook, and a bag of holding, notably. Great stuff to pick up. But anyways, a figure steps through the door.
07:34 [Sildir (Tris)] It's an undead woman wearing a mask carved out of a human skull. And we start fighting.
08:17 [Saturno (Steph)] And I ruled a crazy roll, and I could have killed her.
08:22 [DM (Aarya)] You could have.
08:23 [Saturno (Steph)] If it wasn't for Oreo.
08:24 [DM (Aarya)] Yeah.
08:24 [Sildir (Tris)] It was fair.
08:27 [DM (Aarya)] Sorry to disappoint, but you know, let's jump back into that scene. So when we left off, it was the top of the second round of combat, I believe. And let me get that battle music started up again.
08:27 [DM (Aarya)] Where is the playlist? It wasn't this one? There we go.
08:27 [DM (Aarya)] All right. So we're at the top of the second round of combat. As we move into this round, you've been fighting with this vampire woman.
08:27 [DM (Aarya)] She manages to slip away from your clutches. She breaks out a smokestick and fills the room with a 20-foot cloud of smoke, in which she is now hiding. And as you all are looking around, trying to locate her through the smoke, you hear rapid footsteps approaching from the western door that you entered through.
08:27 [DM (Aarya)] And you see, bursting through the door, more assassins. Great.
09:59 [Ember (Spurthi)] I love that. I thought that scene was drawn for like a second. No.
10:03 [DM (Aarya)] So you see four more of the vampire assassins busting through the door. Presumably, these are the ones that were patrolling about throughout the dungeon before. And they all look to you.
10:03 [DM (Aarya)] They see the situation playing out, and they all take a ready stance. However, just as one of them is about to strike, you see the point of a blade bursting through his chest, and he slumps over. And standing behind him is...
10:03 [DM (Aarya)] Where is he? Vengeance. Syllaus.
10:03 [DM (Aarya)] What? So let me move these folks on over. Ah, you fools cannot not get into trouble without me.
10:03 [DM (Aarya)] And I'll add you all to the initiative. Fools can get in trouble with me. So go ahead and roll your initiative, Syllaus.
10:03 [DM (Aarya)] Damn. Let's go. Damn.
10:03 [DM (Aarya)] Nice. Okay. All right.
10:03 [DM (Aarya)] And with that, let me readjust the initiative order. Okay, so I'll have this assassin here take his turn. And this one is going to pop over here in front of Mercurio and go for a claw attack.
10:03 [DM (Aarya)] So this will be a 14. Does that hit?

12:00 [DM (Aarya)] All right, so here's some damage. That's going to be seven damage. And then it's going to go for another claw.
12:00 [DM (Aarya)] That's a nine. That doesn't hit, right? All right, so it lunges at you, goes for one strike, lands two, deals a bit of damage.
12:00 [DM (Aarya)] And as it goes for its second strike, you manage to duck out of the way. And now it'll move to Syllaus's turn. Okie dokie.

There are pillars of white marble all around, matching the white marble walls with torches affixed and spaced out. On the far end of the room, you see what appears to be some kind of throne made of human bones.

He is chained to the wall and you see that he is wearing a torn up dark uniform that you saw on the masked vigilante earlier.
