The phrase — "three lights of civilization"
At Wachterhaus dinner Neyavr 6, Lady Fiona Wachter told the party a Barovian history lesson while arguing that direct opposition to Strahd von Zarovich is futile (Session 14 @ 01:58:45).
She named three settlements as "the lands three lights of civilization" — Barovia Village, Vallaki, and Krezk — all within the greater valley of Barovia (Session 14 @ 01:58:45). Fiona spoke the first as Barovia in her tale.
| # | Settlement (Fiona's words) | Canonical place |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Barovia | Barovia Village (Session 14 @ 01:58:45) |
| 2 | Vallaki | Vallaki |
| 3 | Krezic | Krezk |
She then revealed there was once a fourth light — fishing village Berez on the Luna River — destroyed when its burgomaster defied Strahd (Session 14 @ 01:58:45). Berez is the lost fourth light; only these three settlements remain lit today.
Fiona framed the tale as a warning: defiance earns destruction; survival requires pragmatism (Session 14 @ 01:58:45).
Barovia Village
Role in the valley
- The party's first settlement in the land — humble, mist-shrouded village in a river valley with Castle Ravenloft on a stone pillar above (Session 2 @ 03:26:26).
- Named on the Durst Manor invitation as "Durst residence, Barovia village"; kingdom inferred as Barovia (Session 1 @ 01:08:04).
- Unknown to the entire party before arrival (Session 1 @ 01:09:04).
Government & crisis (Sessions 3–5)
- Party entered during a week-long undead siege; stake trenches, charred barricades, rooftop crossbow patrols (Session 2 @ 03:31:13; Session 4 @ 00:02:38).
- Kolyan Indirovich slain; Ismark Kolyanovich named burgomaster after Strahd's messenger ended the attacks (Session 4 @ 00:40:45).
- Many villagers fled to Vallaki during the siege (Session 4 @ 00:02:38).
- Ireena Kolyana — burgomaster's sister; Strahd's interest central to village arc (Session 4 @ 00:56:30).
Travel links
- Tser Pool Vistani camp lies on the road toward Vallaki — roughly one day's march from the village if leaving within the hour (Session 4 @ 02:35:37; Session 6 @ 00:09:57).
- Vallaki — a few days' travel from Barovia Village (Session 4 @ 00:02:38).
Return & peace (Sessions 20–21)
- Party secured Strahd peace boon for Barovia Village 9th — citizens may return; no interference from Strahd or his forces if they do not agitate (Session 20 @ 00:36:16).
- Ireena Kolyana and Ernst organized a refugee caravan from Vallaki to return Barovians home (Session 21 @ 01:08:27).
Party has visited: Sessions 2–5, 20+ (caravan departure).
Vallaki
Role in the valley
- Mountain settlement; wooden palisade, iron gates on the old Svalich road; wolf heads on pikes outside the eastern gate (Session 8 @ 03:26:20).
- One of the three lights of civilization (Session 14 @ 01:58:45).
- Dense Svalich Woods just south of Lake Zarovich (Session 8 @ 03:26:20).
Refugee hub
- Many refugees from the Barovia Village siege fled here (Session 4 @ 00:02:38).
- Dozens of refugee tents against the palisade; ragged Barovians locked outside the walls on party's first approach (Session 8 @ 03:28:17).
- Ireena Kolyana promised to help refugees once inside (Session 8 @ 03:30:29).
- Lady Fiona Wachter promised refugee housing once in power; later Ireena Kolyana organized return caravan to the village instead/as well (Session 18 @ 02:58:51; Session 21 @ 01:08:27).
Travel links
- Few days' travel from Barovia Village (Session 4 @ 00:02:38).
- Krezk — half-day march west on the main road (Session 12 @ 00:28:40).
- Lake Zarovich — huge lake north of town; north-gate approach (Session 9 @ 00:55:12).
- Lake Baratok — separate lake ~two hours west via Sunset Gate (Session 13 @ 00:44:56).
Berez survivors
- Survivors of destroyed Berez drifted north to Vallaki and struggled to rebuild lives among ruins of the old (Session 14 @ 01:58:45).
Party has visited: Sessions 8–22 (primary hub since Neyavr 4).
Krezk
Role in the valley
- Village west of central Barovia; one of the three lights of civilization (Session 14 @ 01:58:45).
- Home of Abbey of St. Markovia — many holy men, not a lone substitute priest like Father Bryce (Session 4 @ 02:15:10; Session 12 @ 00:30:28).
- Father Donavich suggested the abbey as possible refuge during village crisis (Session 4 @ 02:15:10).
Government
- Burgomaster Dmitri Krezkov keeps an iron hold; difficult-to-penetrate stone walls (Session 12 @ 00:29:52).
- Father Lucian Petrovich: abbey abbot may help with lycanthropy — Dmitri Krezkov may deny entry if party's werewolf status known (Session 18 @ 02:38:37).
Travel & connections
- Half-day march west of Vallaki (Session 12 @ 00:28:40).
- Dr. Rudolph van Richten traveled from Krezk to substitute at St. Andral's Church (Session 9 @ 00:40:12).
- Hunters Yakov and Razvan claimed to be from Krezk (Session 13 @ 00:57:40).
- Vasili von Holz claims to travel Vallaki–Krezk roads (Session 16 @ 00:30:14).
Party has not visited Krezk as of Session 22 — knowledge is secondhand.
Berez — the lost fourth light
Historically a fourth light alongside the three that remain; its destruction left only Barovia Village, Vallaki, and Krezk lit within the valley (Session 14 @ 01:58:45).

Political lesson (Fiona's framing)
- Living in Barovia means learning not to oppose the Lord of the lands (Session 14 @ 01:58:45).
- Strahd as storm — unreasonable to oppose directly (Session 14 @ 01:57:58).
- Pragmatism over fairy tales; "a lord at peace can be reasoned with… a vengeful Lord cannot" (Session 14 @ 01:58:45).
- Berez = hard lesson; duty to ancestors and children to remember it (Session 14 @ 01:58:45).
