The Vistani of Barovia
Compiled player knowledge about the Vistani in Barovia. See also Madame Eva's Tarokka Reading, Strahd von Zarovich — Party Knowledge (Eliza spy, Stanimir tale), Deliver Arabelle's Gift, and Consult Madame Eva. Not the same as Dusk Elf — dusk-elves camp beside the Vallaki Vistani settlement but are a separate people.
Who they are
- The Vistani are a nomadic people of Barovia: travelers, merchants, and story-collectors who wander the valley's roads (Session 5 @ 00:20:52).
- Stanimir's campfire tale: they come from an ancient land whose name is long forgotten; enemies drove them out and they now wander the lost roads (Session 6 @ 01:07:04).
- On the whole, Ismark Kolyanovich found Vistani hospitable and easy to get along with, though he has met some who were not so likeable—like any group of people (Session 5 @ 00:19:59).
- The Vistani have many secrets; there are rumors some serve the devil (Session 6 @ 00:13:54).
Travel beyond the mists
- Vistani are free to come and go beyond and into the Veil of the Mist at will (Session 6 @ 00:23:57).
- Ismark Kolyanovich confirmed: Vistani are not bound by whatever dark power traps other Barovians in the valley; Barovians do not know why (Session 5 @ 00:29:17).
- Party believes Vistani might obtain wine from outside Barovia (Session 5 @ 00:29:32).
- Madame Eva: the only known escape from the mists for the party is to depose Strahd von Zarovich, who controls them; he has no known heirs after centuries of rule (Session 6 @ 00:24:16).
- Ezmerelda d'Avenir: as a Vistana she has free paths in and out—she walks through the mists (Session 14 @ 00:36:22). Dr. Rudolph van Richten's method of leaving is unknown to her (Session 14 @ 00:36:22).
- Irredel hoped a traveling Vistani might carry word to her family outside Barovia; no one at Tser Pool was planning such a journey when the party asked at dawn departure (Session 7 @ 00:22:19).
Two main encampments in Barovia
Ismark Kolyanovich and Madame Eva both described two major gatherings:
| Camp |
Location |
Party experience |
| Tser Pool |
On the road from Barovia Village toward Vallaki (~one day's march; reachable by nightfall if leaving village within the hour) |
Hospitable camping spot; party sheltered after tarokka reading (Session 4 @ 02:35:37; Session 6 @ 03:04:31) |
| Vallaki Vistani Encampment |
Outside Vallaki palisade, southwest of town |
Less hospitable to outsiders recently; Baron forbids entry to walls (Session 5 @ 00:20:52; Session 6 @ 00:27:36) |
- Madame Eva: most Vistani wander through Barovia and beyond, but the Vallaki-border camp is the other major settlement in the valley (Session 6 @ 00:27:36).
- The Vallaki-area site combines Vistani wagons and tents with nearby Dusk Elf hovels—separate communities in one clearing (Session 9 @ 01:30:42).
Leadership and neutrality
- Madame Eva — ancient seer and matriarch of the camp; had been expecting the party (Session 6 @ 00:20:56).
- Stanimir — host who welcomed the party and led them to Eva's tent (Session 6 @ 00:18:08).
- Eva described Tser Pool as neutral ground: camp does not openly serve Strahd von Zarovich but also does not provoke him (Session 7 @ 00:03:53).
- At the party's first visit, Eva said no Vistani present at this encampment were in league with Strahd—though some Vistani elsewhere see benefit in good terms with him (Session 6 @ 00:26:57).
- Eva warned a shadow / lone servant of darkness was approaching her tent seeking knowledge of the party's future; party must not reveal they know a Strahd agent's true nature (Session 6 @ 00:34:04).
- Party believes Strahd's carriage may have come from the Tser Pool direction before the road encounter (Session 7 @ 00:02:21).
Hospitality and customs
- Guests who drink and dine are expected to play the Game of Stories: each tells a tale; others guess true, false, or half-true; participants wager valuables (Session 6 @ 01:01:25).
- Party shared wine and stew at campfire with camp Vistani (Session 6 @ 01:01:25).
Game of Stories — wagers and tales (Session 6)
Midnight at the gallows (Session 6)
- Eva deferred full tarokka reading to midnight at River Ivlis crossroads gallows; party must come alone and not be followed (Session 6 @ 00:32:21).
- Eliza followed the party, was charmed and confessed as Strahd's spy—called him "the rightful king of the Vistani" (Session 6 @ 02:33:49).
- Sildir executed Eliza after Madame Eva, Torm, and the second divine voice urged preventing her report; Irredel cast Gentle Repose; party buried her in the crossroads cemetery (Session 6 @ 02:42:23).
- Eva performed the tarokka reading; charged party to keep it secret from Strahd's servants (Session 6 @ 02:52:00; Session 6 @ 03:00:48).
- Ghostly procession of failed past adventurers marched toward Castle Ravenloft as warning (Session 6 @ 03:01:54).
- Full card text: see Madame Eva's Tarokka Reading.
Eva's boon — Arabelle errand
- Eva asked party to buy a doll from Blinsky's Toys in Vallaki for great-granddaughter Arabelle (called Aravel at Vallaki camp); tenth name day in two days; gold pouch provided; keep change as payment (Session 6 @ 02:47:44).
- Eva: Arabelle is an "interesting child"; befriending her may be its own reward (Session 6 @ 02:47:44).
- Eva named granddaughter Aravel living at the Vallaki camp; that camp is hostile to outsiders but good Vistani are among them (Session 6 @ 00:28:14).
Baron Vargas's ban
- Baron Vargas Vallakovich does not care for the Vistani; they are forbidden inside Vallaki walls (Session 9 @ 02:25:09).
- Luvash: Baron dislikes Vistani because they gave aid to the dusk elves; claims Vistani would "contaminate his people with malicious unhappiness" (Session 9 @ 02:25:09).
- Luvash and Baron have no correspondence; Baron content to ignore the camp (Session 9 @ 02:27:47).
- Ezmerelda d'Avenir: that Baron doesn't like Vistani—says they're bad luck (Session 14 @ 00:37:21).
- A tailor in Vallaki told the party: "The Vistani? Oh, no, you don't want to go to them. They're bad luck." (Session 11 @ 01:08:54).
Luvash's camp (Session 9)
- Luvash leads the central tent; Arabelle lived here before vanishing (Session 9 @ 02:15:12).
- Alexei was tasked to watch Arabelle; got drunk on wine Yan gave him; woke to find both gone (Session 9 @ 02:18:14).
- Yan found dead with beast-rake wounds, clutching black cloak scrap matching fabric at Lake Zarovich scuffle (Session 9 @ 02:19:04; Session 9 @ 02:31:38).
- Unconfirmed: whether Yan betrayed the camp or was framed (Session 9 @ 02:23:56).
- Luvash offered a hefty reward; begged party to find Arabelle since Baron won't let Vistani into town (Session 9 @ 02:25:38).
- Kasimir Velikov (dusk elf, not Vistani) urged immediate visit when party mentioned the Arabelle errand (Session 9 @ 02:12:56).
- Party warned at approach: some Vistani are friends of Strahd—keep inclinations private (Session 9 @ 01:25:24).
- Sildir thought some Vistani at this camp might serve Strahd; Kasimir: some do, some don't—Luvash is allowed to remain (Session 9 @ 01:51:43).
Vampire / werewolf concerns at camp
- Mercurio asked whether the encampment was safe from vampires; Kasimir Velikov (dusk elf): "as safe as anywhere else in Barovia" (Session 9 @ 01:56:20).
- Mercurio glimpsed a cloaked figure with animalistic ears and snout in brush near camp (Session 9 @ 01:28:59).
Arabelle — seer bloodline
- Great-granddaughter of Madame Eva; inherited seer's gift as a bloodline trait—unpredictable who receives it (Session 13 @ 02:58:45).
- Kidnapped by wolf-mask figure; rescued by Nightingale; hidden at Khazan's Wizard Tower because kidnappers targeted her seeing arts (Session 13 @ 03:00:15).
- Volenta listed Arabelle among kidnapping targets—feared a Vistani seer could be a tool against the devil (Session 18 @ 02:14:56).
- Refused to leave tower until Court threat cleared; Luvash not notified per Nightingale (Session 13 @ 03:07:40).
- Wants Blinsky toy resembling "bird boy" (Nightingale); borrowed Saturno's tarokka deck (Session 13 @ 03:21:15).
- Recognizes Ezmerelda d'Avenir as a Vistani name but has never met her (Session 13 @ 03:33:30).
- Deliver Arabelle's Gift: Eva's official Blinsky purchase still outstanding; party sent Izek's Doll (nonmagical Blinsky's Toys make) via Nightingale as proxy partial completion (Session 16 @ 02:10:24; Session 17 @ 00:02:05).
- Vistani woman; red hair with white streak, red headscarf; not from any Barovia encampment—does not stay in one place (Session 14 @ 00:30:42).
- Wagon at Khazan's Wizard Tower with threatening signs in her name (Session 13 @ 02:18:46).
- Party believes hunters' description of a red-haired woman with a "wand" that blows holes in chests refers to her firearm (Session 13 @ 03:39:56).
- Confronted party with flintlock; addressed Sildir as "Giorgio" (Unconfirmed why) (Session 13 @ 03:39:56).
- Trained as child by Dr. Rudolph van Richten; member of Monster Hunter faction; hunting him (Session 14 @ 00:32:30).
- Asked why party travels with "Goldie's kid"—Nightingale nickname Goldie (Session 14 @ 00:21:13).
- Loaned silver short sword to Sildir; agreed to tell Ismark Kolyanovich Ireena Kolyana is all right if she reaches Barovia Village (Session 14 @ 00:39:44).
